Who needs a USDOT number
Interstate trucks 10,001 lbs and up
Any truck, or truck and trailer, rated or loaded at 10,001 pounds or more that crosses state lines in commerce.
Passenger vehicles
Vans carrying 9 to 15 people for pay, or any vehicle built for 16 or more, in interstate commerce.
Hazmat haulers
Any vehicle carrying hazardous materials in amounts that require placards.
Many intrastate carriers
More than 30 states also require a USDOT number for commercial vehicles that never leave the state.
Hauling for pay across state lines? You need MC operating authority too.
What the application asks for
Have these ready and the application takes one phone call. The answers decide which rules and insurance limits apply to you, so they matter.
Business details
Legal name, any DBA, EIN, and your principal place of business. Sole proprietors can use an SSN.
Company official
The owner or officer who signs. They verify their identity in Motus with a photo ID and a phone.
Operation type
For-hire, private or exempt; interstate or intrastate; and whether you haul hazmat.
Cargo you haul
General freight, building materials, livestock, refrigerated food and so on.
Trucks and drivers
Power units you own or lease, and how many drivers hold a CDL.
How it works
- 1
Order and tell us about your business
A few questions about what you haul and where. We call you within one business day.
- 2
Verify your identity in Motus
FMCSA requires the company official to do this with a photo ID and a phone. It takes about 10 minutes, and we stay on the phone with you.
- 3
Add us as your service provider
One step in Motus gives Evergreen Comply access to complete the application for you.
- 4
Review, sign and you’re filed
You check our entries and sign. We track the filing until FMCSA activates it.
When you can use it
Issued inactive
FMCSA assigns your USDOT number when it accepts the application, but it starts inactive.
Private carriers
You can operate once FMCSA activates the number.
For-hire carriers
You can’t haul for pay until your operating authority is active too.
Every two years
Update your record (MCS-150), even if nothing changed, or FMCSA can deactivate the number.
