Questions about Hazmat Shift
Is Hazmat Shift free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account. The shift report is shown on the page; an email address is only needed if you want a copy sent to you.
Does playing Hazmat Shift count as DOT hazmat training?
No. 49 CFR 172.704 requires general awareness, function-specific, safety and security awareness training, with testing and a training record, at least once every three years. Hazmat Shift is a free practice game. The DOT Hazmat General Awareness course covers the general awareness and security awareness parts with a test and certificate; function-specific training, such as the Advanced course, covers the job you do.
How accurate is the game?
Every material, label, marking, placard and shipping-paper rule comes from 49 CFR Parts 172, 173 and 177 as published on the eCFR. The game sticks to non-bulk packages on a truck, rounds package weights, and simplifies a shift to four packages so it fits in three minutes.
What does a shift cover?
At the receiving dock you check labels, markings, orientation arrows and package condition. At load-out you decide which placards the truck needs, including the 1,001 lb rule. At the gate you check the bill of lading for the basic description order, the total quantity and the emergency response phone number.
Turn the shift into a certificate
DOT Hazmat General Awareness covers every rule in the game, with a test and a certificate for the general awareness and security awareness training 49 CFR 172.704 requires. The Advanced course adds function-specific training on loading, segregation and placarding.
