Who needs an MC number
For-hire interstate carriers
You haul other people’s freight across state lines and get paid for it.
Owner-operators going independent
Leaving a lease means running under your own authority, insurance and BOC-3.
Hotshot carriers
For-hire hotshot loads across state lines need authority like any other carrier.
Exempt commodities, such as unprocessed farm products, don’t need operating authority. Private carriers don’t either.
DOT number vs. MC number
USDOT number
Identifies your company for safety: inspections, crashes, audits. Required for most commercial vehicles.
MC number
Your operating authority: the right to haul regulated freight for pay across state lines.
You need both when
You’re a for-hire carrier in interstate commerce. Most of our customers are.
How it works
- 1
Order and tell us about your business
A few questions about what you haul and where. We call you within one business day.
- 2
Verify your identity in Motus
FMCSA requires the company official to do this with a photo ID and a phone. It takes about 10 minutes, and we stay on the phone with you.
- 3
Add us as your service provider
One step in Motus gives Evergreen Comply access to complete the application for you.
- 4
Review, sign and you’re filed
You check our entries and sign. We track the filing until FMCSA activates it.
How long it takes to get an MC number
Application filed
Your USDOT number and MC docket number are assigned once FMCSA accepts the application.
Published in the FMCSA Register
After FMCSA’s review, usually a few weeks.
10-day protest period
Anyone may object to your application. It rarely happens.
Authority active
Once your BMC-91X insurance filing and BOC-3 are on file. Both are due within 90 days of applying.
