Who needs broker authority
New freight brokers
You arrange truck transportation of other people’s freight and get paid for it.
Carriers that also broker
Arranging loads for other carriers that you haven’t taken on yourself needs broker authority, separate from carrier authority.
Freight agents going independent
Agents working under another broker’s authority need their own when they start a brokerage.
Freight forwarders, which take responsibility for the shipment, need freight forwarder authority instead. Call us.
What broker authority takes
USDOT number
Brokers get one too, at no FMCSA charge.
Broker authority
FMCSA charges $300. Your docket is an MC number, like a carrier’s.
A $75,000 bond or trust
Filed by your surety or trust company as a BMC-84 or BMC-85. Your authority can’t go active without it.
BOC-3
Process agents in each state where you have an office or write contracts. A blanket filing covers them all.
UCR
Brokers register every year at the lowest fee: $55 for 2027.
How it works
- 1
Order and tell us about your business
A few questions about what you haul and where. We call you within one business day.
- 2
Verify your identity in Motus
FMCSA requires the company official to do this with a photo ID and a phone. It takes about 10 minutes, and we stay on the phone with you.
- 3
Add us as your service provider
One step in Motus gives Evergreen Comply access to complete the application for you.
- 4
Review, sign and you’re filed
You check our entries and sign. We track the filing until FMCSA activates it.
How long it takes
Application filed
Your USDOT number and MC docket number are assigned once FMCSA accepts the application.
Published in the FMCSA Register
After FMCSA’s review, usually a few weeks.
10-day protest period
Anyone may object to your application. It rarely happens.
Authority active
Once your BMC-84 or BMC-85 and BOC-3 are on file. Both are due within 90 days of applying.
