North Carolina CDL MVR for employers
Order a commercial MVR for a CDL driver licensed in North Carolina. The total includes North Carolina’s $12.75 fee at cost. The driver enters their details and authorizes the report privately, and you don’t need an account to buy.
What a North Carolina MVR shows
A North Carolina driver license record lists licenses issued, renewed, cancelled or revoked, all disqualifications, all convictions affecting the license, and prayers for judgment continued that may lead to a revocation. Source
NCDMV offers a limited record covering 3 years, a limited record covering 7 years, and a complete history, certified or uncertified. Source
The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
North Carolina rules employers should know
- North Carolina can suspend a license at 12 points within 3 years, or 8 points within the 3 years after a reinstatement. A first suspension lasts 60 days. Source
- North Carolina’s rule against counting convictions older than 10 years doesn’t apply to offenses in a commercial vehicle, or to a CDL holder’s offenses in a personal vehicle. Those older convictions can still count against a CDL driver. Source
- A North Carolina CDL holder must tell their employer in writing about any traffic conviction other than parking within 30 days, and about a suspension, revocation, disqualification or out-of-service order by the end of the next business day. Source
- North Carolina employers must notify NCDMV in writing within 5 business days after confirming that a driver or applicant tested positive on a DOT drug or alcohol test, or refused one. Source
When you need a North Carolina MVR
- Hiring: within 30 days of a driver’s start date, get an MVR covering the past 3 years from every state where the driver held a license or permit in that time. That includes North Carolina even if your company is based somewhere else. 49 CFR 391.23
- Every 12 months: get an MVR covering at least the past 12 months from each state where the driver held a CDL or permit during that time, and review it. 49 CFR 391.25
- Not sure where else the driver has been licensed? MVR + CDLIS searches the national CDL database for licenses in other states.
Ordering directly from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV)
Employers can order online through myNCDMV, by mail with Form DL-DPPA-1, or in person in Raleigh or Huntersville. Ordering someone else’s record online requires the requester’s own valid North Carolina driver license or ID card; employers without one can order by mail or in person. Source
Drivers who want a copy of their own record should request it from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Evergreen sells reports to employers only. ncdot.gov
Questions
- How much does a North Carolina MVR cost?
- $22.00 for an MVR only, or $25.00 with a CDLIS search: Evergreen’s $9.25 or $12.25 report price plus North Carolina’s $12.75 fee at cost.
- How far back does a North Carolina MVR go?
- NCDMV offers a limited record covering 3 years, a limited record covering 7 years, and a complete history, certified or uncertified. The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
- Does the driver have to consent?
- Yes. After you pay, the driver gets a private link to enter their details and sign the authorization. The report runs only after the driver authorizes.
- Is a North Carolina MVR enough for a driver qualification file?
- It covers the North Carolina part of the record. A driver qualification file also needs records from any other state where the driver held a license in the past 3 years, plus the other documents listed in 49 CFR 391.51. An MVR is not a hiring decision.
