California CDL MVR for employers
Order a commercial MVR for a CDL driver licensed in California. The total includes California’s $2.00 fee at cost. The driver enters their details and authorizes the report privately, and you don’t need an account to buy.
What a California MVR shows
A California driver record contains information from the driver’s license application, reportable abstracts of convictions, and reportable accidents. Residence addresses are confidential and go only to the driver unless a law requires otherwise. Source
California reports most convictions and collisions for 3 years and most 2-point violations for 10 years. A CDL holder’s DUI convictions are reported for 55 years. Source
The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
California rules employers should know
- California employers must enroll drivers in DMV’s Employer Pull Notice (EPN) program if they need a commercial Class A or B license, or a Class C license with a hazmat, passenger or tank endorsement. EPN lets the employer monitor those drivers’ records. Source
- EPN costs $5 per enrolled driver and $1 per report, and an EPN employer can request a prospective driver’s record for $5. Since April 1, 2026, EPN employers must enroll and manage drivers electronically. Source
- California may suspend an adult’s license at 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24 or 8 in 36. A conviction in a vehicle that requires a Class A or B license counts 1.5 times its usual points. Source
- California Highway Patrol terminal inspections check that the carrier has an EPN record, current within 12 months, on file for each of its drivers. Source
When you need a California MVR
- Hiring: within 30 days of a driver’s start date, get an MVR covering the past 3 years from every state where the driver held a license or permit in that time. That includes California even if your company is based somewhere else. 49 CFR 391.23
- Every 12 months: get an MVR covering at least the past 12 months from each state where the driver held a CDL or permit during that time, and review it. 49 CFR 391.25
- Not sure where else the driver has been licensed? MVR + CDLIS searches the national CDL database for licenses in other states.
Ordering directly from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
Businesses can request another person’s record on Form INF 70, Request for Record Information, citing the permitted use for employers of commercial drivers. DMV is required to send the driver a copy of the request. Source
Drivers who want a copy of their own record should request it from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Evergreen sells reports to employers only. dmv.ca.gov
Questions
- How much does a California MVR cost?
- $11.25 for an MVR only, or $14.25 with a CDLIS search: Evergreen’s $9.25 or $12.25 report price plus California’s $2.00 fee at cost.
- How far back does a California MVR go?
- California reports most convictions and collisions for 3 years and most 2-point violations for 10 years. A CDL holder’s DUI convictions are reported for 55 years. The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
- Does the driver have to consent?
- Yes. After you pay, the driver gets a private link to enter their details and sign the authorization. The report runs only after the driver authorizes.
- Is a California MVR enough for a driver qualification file?
- It covers the California part of the record. A driver qualification file also needs records from any other state where the driver held a license in the past 3 years, plus the other documents listed in 49 CFR 391.51. An MVR is not a hiring decision.
