Indiana CDL MVR for employers
Order a commercial MVR for a CDL driver licensed in Indiana. The total includes Indiana’s $12.00 fee at cost. The driver enters their details and authorizes the report privately, and you don’t need an account to buy.
What a Indiana MVR shows
Indiana’s official driver record shows license and CDL status, CDLIS status, the driver’s CDL self-certification, medical certificate status, suspensions, disqualifications and convictions. Each conviction is flagged if it happened in a commercial vehicle or while hauling hazmat. Source
Indiana driver records show the driver’s lifetime history, including commercial license information. Source
The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
Indiana rules employers should know
- Indiana assigns 0 to 10 points for each moving-violation conviction, and points stay active on the record for 2 years from the conviction date. Source
- Indiana Driver Employer Link (IDEL) is the BMV’s voluntary notification system for employers of Indiana CDL drivers. The BMV says an IDEL record pull does not replace the annual MVR that FMCSA requires. Source
- Indiana Code 9-14-13 controls who can get personal information from BMV records. It allows an employer, or its agent or insurer, to verify information about a CDL holder. Source
- Indiana’s habitual traffic violator law sets serious penalties, including long suspensions, for drivers who repeatedly commit traffic offenses over a 10-year period. Source
When you need a Indiana MVR
- Hiring: within 30 days of a driver’s start date, get an MVR covering the past 3 years from every state where the driver held a license or permit in that time. That includes Indiana even if your company is based somewhere else. 49 CFR 391.23
- Every 12 months: get an MVR covering at least the past 12 months from each state where the driver held a CDL or permit during that time, and review it. 49 CFR 391.25
- Not sure where else the driver has been licensed? MVR + CDLIS searches the national CDL database for licenses in other states.
Ordering directly from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV)
Employers can mail State Form 53789, Request for Certified Records, citing the exception for verifying a CDL holder’s information. A certified driver record costs $4 and a certified driver history $8; allow 2 to 4 weeks. Source
Drivers who want a copy of their own record should request it from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Evergreen sells reports to employers only. in.gov
Questions
- How much does a Indiana MVR cost?
- $21.25 for an MVR only, or $24.25 with a CDLIS search: Evergreen’s $9.25 or $12.25 report price plus Indiana’s $12.00 fee at cost.
- How far back does a Indiana MVR go?
- Indiana driver records show the driver’s lifetime history, including commercial license information. The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
- Does the driver have to consent?
- Yes. After you pay, the driver gets a private link to enter their details and sign the authorization. The report runs only after the driver authorizes.
- Is a Indiana MVR enough for a driver qualification file?
- It covers the Indiana part of the record. A driver qualification file also needs records from any other state where the driver held a license in the past 3 years, plus the other documents listed in 49 CFR 391.51. An MVR is not a hiring decision.
