Illinois CDL MVR for employers
Order a commercial MVR for a CDL driver licensed in Illinois. The total includes Illinois’s $20.00 fee at cost. The driver enters their details and authorizes the report privately, and you don’t need an account to buy.
What a Illinois MVR shows
Employers get Illinois’s public driving record abstract, which shows the driver’s suspensions, revocations and convictions for traffic violations. Court supervision dispositions appear only on a separate abstract limited to the driver, attorneys, prosecutors, police and courts. Source
Illinois moving violations stay on the record 4 to 5 years from the conviction date, or at least 7 years from reinstatement if they led to a suspension or revocation. Alcohol and drug offenses stay for life. Source
The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
Illinois rules employers should know
- Illinois can suspend or revoke a license when a driver is convicted of 3 or more moving violations committed within any 12 months. Source
- For CDL and CLP holders, and for any driver in a commercial vehicle, Illinois records court supervision (other than for parking) as a conviction for CDL disqualification, and doesn’t keep it confidential as it does for other drivers. Source
- Illinois prohibits releasing a licensee’s address or other personal information to third parties, but it does provide convictions, license withdrawals and crashes. Source
When you need a Illinois MVR
- Hiring: within 30 days of a driver’s start date, get an MVR covering the past 3 years from every state where the driver held a license or permit in that time. That includes Illinois even if your company is based somewhere else. 49 CFR 391.23
- Every 12 months: get an MVR covering at least the past 12 months from each state where the driver held a CDL or permit during that time, and review it. 49 CFR 391.25
- Not sure where else the driver has been licensed? MVR + CDLIS searches the national CDL database for licenses in other states.
Ordering directly from the Illinois Secretary of State
To buy another person’s record directly, give the driver’s full name, sex, and date of birth or license number, and pay $20 for a certified abstract. Before releasing it, the Secretary of State notifies the driver of the requester’s name and the request date. Source
Drivers who want a copy of their own record should request it from the Illinois Secretary of State. Evergreen sells reports to employers only. ilsos.gov
Questions
- How much does a Illinois MVR cost?
- $29.25 for an MVR only, or $32.25 with a CDLIS search: Evergreen’s $9.25 or $12.25 report price plus Illinois’s $20.00 fee at cost.
- How far back does a Illinois MVR go?
- Illinois moving violations stay on the record 4 to 5 years from the conviction date, or at least 7 years from reinstatement if they led to a suspension or revocation. Alcohol and drug offenses stay for life. The years of history in a report ordered through Evergreen depend on what the state releases for employment checks.
- Does the driver have to consent?
- Yes. After you pay, the driver gets a private link to enter their details and sign the authorization. The report runs only after the driver authorizes.
- Is a Illinois MVR enough for a driver qualification file?
- It covers the Illinois part of the record. A driver qualification file also needs records from any other state where the driver held a license in the past 3 years, plus the other documents listed in 49 CFR 391.51. An MVR is not a hiring decision.
